Mar 22 2009 Josh 12-14, 1 Cor 7

Scripture
12Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said. Joshua 14:12

Observation
Caleb has every right to be tired....to be weary......to be satisfied with just sitting back and propping his feet up. After all, he was 85 years old, and had just come out of 40 years spent wandering in the wilderness and then five years of pretty intense fighting. The easiest thing for Caleb to do was retire and be content with life.

But Caleb is not content until he receives what he has been promised. For the last 45 years, Caleb has had a dream of living on a mountain.

Application
Caleb wasn’t satisfied with where he was, he wanted a piece of the rock, he wanted the mountain. Forty five years earlier he had laid his eyes on this mountain and he never lost sight of it.

Too many people are willing to dwell in the low county.....too many children of God willing to settle for living in the valley.....too many of us content with being nominal Christians........too many of us dwell in mediocrity when God wants us to live on the Mountain.

Caleb wanted the mountain.....he wanted to be a little bit closer to heaven.

Prayer
Thank you Lord that the dreams you place in my heart is a constant source of strength. I too want to live on the mountain.

Mar 21 2009 Josh 9-11, 1 Cor 6

Scripture
And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel. Joshua 10:14

Observation
The Gibeonites had deceived their way into a treaty with Israel, thus saving their lives. But when the hill tribes heard of it they looked on the Gibeonites as traitors and decided to move against them.
The Gibeonites quickly sent word to Joshua asking for his help. I wonder what I would have done. Had Joshua not been a man of principle he could have used this a way to escape from the consequences of his rash treaty with the Gibeonites. After all they had lied to him.

But Joshua did not think that way. He had made a commitment in God’s name with the Gibeonites and he intended to honor it.

Application
God expects us to do what is right regardless of what others do. How many times do we let the bad actions of others tempt us to do something less than the righteous and honorable thing?

Because he was doing the right thing…he calls upon His God for a miracle. Is the God you serve big enough to perform miracles in your behalf? Or does your faith limit what God is able to do for you?

Prayer
Lord, help me to always walk in the paths of righteousness.

Mar 20 2009 Josh 7-8 Ps 69, 1 Cor 5

Scripture
Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you. Joshua 7:13

Observation
God had gone to great lengths to tell his people that if they would follow his commands they would enjoy his blessings. If also made it clear that if they didn’t follow his commands, they would be cursed. It didn’t take very long for his people to see, God meant what he said.

They had experience a tremendous victory in the battle of Jericho and now they had just experience a huge defeat at Ai. What was the difference; sin.

Application
I cannot quite get over how one man’s sin affected so many innocent people. It reminds me of the text in Romans 5:19 which says, “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous”.

There is something really important for us to learn about community. What I do affects others in my community. No one sins alone. All through the Bible and life we see how a seemingly little sin affects so many other people.

Prayer
Father, I pray that as I commit to live in obedience to your will, others will be blessed by that as well.

Mar 19 2009 Josh 3-6 Ps 37, 1 Cor 4

Scripture
And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it. Joshua 3:3

Observation
From the time that the Israelites left Egypt, the presence of God in a cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, went before them and led them in the way in which they should go. This cloud of God’s glory represented His visible presence with His people. By day the cloud would lead them and at night, it would settle over the tabernacle and over the Ark of the Covenant.

Here in Joshua, the cloud is no longer mentioned. When it was time for Israel to move they are now to follow the ark of God as it is carried by the priests of the Lord

Application
Joshua was trying to get them to anticipate the moving of God. They were to look and when they saw the Ark move, they were to follow. I wonder how many times have I miss out, because when God moves, I wasn’t paying attention. This can happen at church or even at home when I open my Bible.

God is moving all the time in the world around us, but most people never even notice. People see what they are looking for. What if we could begin our day by looking for God and how He might be moving around us? What a difference that would make!

Prayer
Lord, I do believe you are at work in the world all around me. I will be looking for you to move. Lord, when I see you move, please help me to follow.

Mar 18 2009 Josh 1-2, 1 Cor 3

Scripture
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 1Corinthians 3:6

Observation
The Apostle Paul is sharing how God works to build His kingdom. Paul knew that he had a part to play, and that it was only a part. He knew there were other parts for other people and even God gets involved in the process.

It is clear that Paul understood this as a process…first you plant, then you water and then God makes it grow.

Application
It is truly an amazing thing that God would even involve us in the work of growing his kingdom. And it is not an incidental work but a extremely important work.

All around me are places that I can plant the Gospel seed. And yes, there are places all around me that others have planted and I get to water. There is certainly an implied promise and it is this…if we will do our part, God will do His.

Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to see the places I may plant and that I may water. Thank you for the promise of the increase.

Mar 17 2009 Deut 32-34, 1 Cor 2

Scripture
Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord, the shield of your help and the sword of your majesty! Your enemies shall submit to you, and you shall tread down their high places. Deuteronomy 33:29

Observation
Surely Israel knew something big was getting ready to happen. As it turns out, God is getting ready to do something new in their life, but not with Moses. Moses leadership was coming to an end and Israel needed to be reassured that God was their leader and he would fulfill His promise.

Application
There are times in our lives when God is ready to do something new but before He does we have to be willing to let go us other things. Change is never easy, but with God change is always for the better.

God uses people to bring blessing into my life. In this case He is going to use Joshua. But he wants them and me to know, He is the one who protects me, He is the one who blesses me and He is the who is leading me.

Prayer
Lord, please help me not to hang too tightly on the past when you are moving me into the future.

Mar 16 2009 Deut 30-31, Ps 40, 1 Cor 1

Scripture
But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are. Corinthians 1:27-28

Observation
You would think God would choose to save the world through a powerful, charismatic leader who could wield power wisely and crush God’s enemies. But God doesn’t work the way we do. God’s ways are not the same as our ways and we don’t always understand his methods. Rather than send a powerful hero into the world, he sent a defenseless baby.

It seems God deliberately chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise.

Application
God still works this way in our lives. He deliberately chooses to work in ways that challenge my thinking and understanding. We look at a situation and the answer seems so obvious to us and then God does what He wants to do and how He wants to do it. It always leaves me stunned and amazed.

I guess when it really comes down to it, this is what makes following Jesus so exciting.

Prayer
Lord, I know I will never be able to fully understand your greatness. Thank you for working in my life in ways I have never dreamed of.

Mar 15 2009 Deut 28-29, Gal 6

Scripture
And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet. Deuteronomy 29:5

Observation
It would have taken only 11 days to travel from Egypt to the Promised Land, but because of their disobedience, it took them 40 years. Moses is recounting some of these experience and reminding them of these great and marvelous things God has done for them in delivering them out of Egypt.

Then is also calls their attention to something really quite small but yet so important. Their clothes and shoes had not worn out during their travels in the wilderness. I wonder…had anyone even noticed this before God told them?

Application
What an amazing God we serve. God truly takes care of us from the smallest to the biggest details of our life. They might not have noticed, but God did.

What a great lesson God is teaching us. Even when we are not faithful, He is.

Prayer
Thank you Lord for your faithfulness!

Mar 14 2009 Deut 25-27, Gal 5

Scripture
Also today the Lord has proclaimed you to be His special people, just as He promised you, that you should keep all His commandments, and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken. Deuteronomy 26:18-19

Observation
Moses had just shared chapter after chapter of laws and commands that God wanted his people to follow. God was very specific and detailed with just about every area of life.

And now it seems God is telling them why. They were to be a special people. God wanted them to be different not just in name, but in their actions and interactions with each other.

Application
I wonder how the people must of felt after Moses had spoken all this commandments. I wonder if they felt overwhelmed. It seems it would be hard enough to even remember it all, much less observe it all.

Sometimes when I read the Bible I too feel overwhelmed. I think to myself, there is no way I will ever measure up to what God is asking. But then I am reminded why God asks me to live according to his will… He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy people to the Lord your God

Prayer
Wow! What an incredible promise you have made. All through the scriptures we are promised…if we exalt you, you will exalt us.

Mar 13 2009 Deut 22-24, Gal 4

Scripture
My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you. Galatians 4:19

Observation
Paul is asking some hard questions about his ministry to the people of Galatia.Had it all been for no purpose? Had he wasted his efforts? Paul wanted to see these believers become disciples and what he was seeing was not very encouraging.

Application
What parent hasn’t ever reached a point that they begin to wonder if their efforts to raise their child were all wasted. Paul is their father. He has brought them to faith. He wanted more than anything to see these believers grow and mature in Christ and become all God wanted them to be.

Giving birth is never easy. (I know it is easy for a man to say this) But that is exactly what God calls us to do…give birth…spiritual birth. And then we are given the responsibility to raise them and nurture them into spiritual adulthood.

I am also reminded that there are people in my life that God has used to grow me as a Christian. I know I have disappointed them many times, but they have never given up on me.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for spiritual families; for the blessing and responsibility.

Mar 12 2009 Deut 19-21, Gal 3

Scripture
This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Observation
The issue that Paul is trying to deal with here is whether the true Christian life is based on works or is it based on faith. What started out as a faith based experience in these believers was being threatened by becoming an experience based on works.

Paul asks a simple question; did you receive the Holy Spirit by keeping the law or when you heard about the Gospel of grace?

Application
In the experience of every believer should be a dramatic change in their life when they receive the Spirit of God; the Galatians were no exception. Paul is simply pointing them back to this experience that should have easily delineated their life of works and their life of faith.

The Spirit of God is never something that can be worked for or manufactured in our life. It is a gift that God gives in response to exercising true faith in Christ.

Prayer
Father, thank you for the great gift of your spirit that is mine as I accept Christ by faith and faith alone.

Mar 10 2009 Deut 13-15, Gal 1

Scripture
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel. Galatians 1:6

Observation
After a brief salutation, Paul gives his reason for writing. He is concerned about false teachers perverting the gospel. He had carefully preached the truth in Galatia. Now he was grieved that the truth was being corrupted.
Something interesting is being said. The gospel stands alone; for it is truth. To change or take away from the gospel is not possible for it to remain the gospel. To do so, makes “another” gospel.

Application
The word marvel means to be astonished, astounded or bewildered. His astonishment was not at the false teachers, but at the church. He was not surprised that there were false teachers; he was surprised that the church was FOLLOWING them.

Paul had expected false teachers and his writings constantly sound the alarm. So he expected false teachers, he just didn’t expect the church to follow them. The Galatians had been taught by the greatest teacher the church has ever known apart from the Lord Himself; yet they readily rejected the truth in favor of error.

Prayer
Lord help me to be grounded and firmly planted in the Gospel of Jesus.

Mar 9 2009 Deut 10-12, Mark 16

Scripture
“But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.” Mark 16:7

Observation
The angel is apparently waiting at the tomb to tell any possible visitors why the tomb is empty. As some women come to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus, they are the very first persons to hear the news; Jesus is risen!

I see something interesting here. God could have told the disciples personally that Christ was resurrected. Jesus could have appeared to them or he could have sent another angel to proclaim the news, but he didn’t. God has chosen to let others share the Good News of Jesus.

Application
I cannot seem to get over the idea that the angel specifically singles out Peter. Everyone knew what Peter did and he had to be feeling about as low as a bug after betraying Jesus.

There have been so many times I have let down my Savior and my natural response is to think that God is done with me. God is reminding us that just because we have failed him, his plan to use us is not altered.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for the wonderful privilege of telling others the Good News of Jesus.

Mar 8 2009 Deut 7-9, Mark 15

Scripture
So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!” Mark 15:39

Observation
I can imagine his day started as any other day. He was a soldier and he was expected to carry out his orders. Rome ran a tight ship and would not tolerate crimes again the state. Executions had become an ordinary part of his routine and this day would be no different…at least he thought it wouldn’t.

Application
I wonder at what point he realized this was no ordinary execution. Was it when he noticed the crowd? It surely was a larger than normal crowd. Was it when the victim was nailed to the cross? Instead of cursing and spiting insults this man prayed for my forgiveness. Was it when he promised one of the other criminals’ paradise? He’d certainly never heard anything like that before. Maybe it was right before his death; instead of defeat, this man was shouting something that almost sounded like victory.

Jesus said if I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me. Even in his hour of death, Jesus has kept his promise.

Prayer
Lord, it still hurts me to think of what you went through to save me. Please forgive me for causing you to endure the cross.

Mar 7 2009 Deut 5-6, Ps 43, Mark 14

Scripture
And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” Mark 14:36

Observation
Jesus’ time has come. His capture, his trial, his sentence and death are now imminent. Jesus knew what would happen. Everything seemed to be destined. Jesus already knew what would happen. Still, this time was different.

I can think of no other place where Jesus is struggling with doing His father’s will. All through his life, he seems willing and anxious to do his father’s bidding. But here in this quiet garden we see something unusual, Jesus’ will and is father’s will are not pointing in the same direction.

Application
What a rare glance the Holy Spirit gives us into what it really means to be a disciple. Anyone can be a follower of God when we want to go in the same direction as God does, but what happens when we want to go in different directions?

Being a disciple is not always about wanting and desiring to do God’s will…but it is about always choosing to do God’s will.

Prayer
Lord when I am struggling to do your will, please help me to remember Jesus also struggled, but overcame His struggle by surrendering.

Mar 6 2009 Deut 3-4, Ps 36, Mark 13

Scripture
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. Mark 13:13

Observation
Jesus is specifically talking about the last days. This chapter is filled with signs about the end. He talks of wars, famines and earthquakes and then all of a sudden he shifts the conversation to what will be happening to his disciples. We will be betrayed by friends and family members and arrested and tried; he even mentions some will be put to death for being his disciple!

Application
It is so hard to imagine things getting to this level. Let’s face it…it is so easy to be a Christian today at least in the United States. The world couldn’t care less if choose to be a follower of Jesus. And yet Jesus says one day all that will change.

I have to ask myself the question, what would I do if I was placed in a situation of choosing between obeying Jesus and preserving my life or disobeying Jesus and sparing my life?

I guess we all need to ask ourselves…how much do we really love Jesus?

Prayer
Lord, I hope I never have to face that kind of decision, but if I do, I hope and pray to choose you.

Mar 5 2009 Deut 1-2, Mark 12

Scripture
Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. Mark 12:41-42

Observation
What an interesting place for our Lord to hang out, right across from the offering container. He had just spoken about being careful not to do acts of righteousness to be seen of men.

Application
We know that the church was basically corrupt in Jesus day. The Scribes, Pharisees and other religious leaders were practically stealing the money from the people. I have often wondered why our Lord did not tell the widow to just keep her offering. She certainly needed more than they did.

I believe the Lord is teaching us that when we give, we give to Him. It is truly an act of worship. Once we give something to Jesus, it is His concern and not ours. I wonder what kind of offering from the rich would have been noticed by Jesus?

Prayer
Lord, help me to trust you in every area of my life, especially my finances. It is all yours, even when it is in my pockets.

Mar 4 2009 Num 34-36, Mark 11

Scripture
And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.” And His disciples heard it. Mark 11:13-14

Observation
What an awesome thing that is happening. Jesus is hungry and sees a fig tree loaded with leaves which was an advertisement that the tree should also have fruit. As Jesus approaches, he begins to examine the tree only to be disappointed when no figs are present.

If the tree would not produce the fruit, there was no purpose for the tree to exists, so Jesus pronounces a curse upon it.

Application
God has created all things for a purpose. This not only includes all of nature but all of life. I was created for a purpose. There will be a time when God examines me to see if I have produced my God-intended fruit.

When I fail to produce fruit in my life, I rob the world of what He intended to do through me.

Prayer
Lord, help me to live out your purpose for my life.

Mar 3 2009 Num 32-33, Mark 10

Scripture
Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Mark 10:21-22

Observation
If there was ever a man who had potential, it was this man. He had so much going for him; this should have been a slam dunk. This story reminds us that we can gain all of the treasures of this world and still be incomplete. This man had it all; power, wealth, possessions, position and respect. But he needed something else.

He knows his life will end and he wants more. So what is his request? Eternal life. Surely it is God that has planted eternity in all our hearts.

Application
God is speaking a truth that is hard to accept but it is really quite simple to understand. I must be loved above everything else in your life.

It isn’t that God desires us to sell everything before we can follow him. But He does require that we cast off anything we love more than him. Christ must be first in our life; no ifs, ands or buts.

Prayer
Lord, we all struggle with rival kingdoms. I pray that I will allow nothing in my life to compete with my love for you.

Mar 2 2009 Num 30-31, Mark 9

Scripture
Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, “What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?” But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest
Mark 9:33-34

Observation
Jesus had a special way of leading people through asking questions. Here is no exception. In response to Jesus question, “what were you guys talking about back there”. The disciples were quiet and immediately convicted.

Mark tells us that they didn’t answer Him. They didn’t answer because they were ashamed. As long as they thought that Jesus didn’t know they were fine. If they had been discussing how to have a better prayer life, or how to serve God better, they would have been eager to tell Jesus about that. But they kept silent because they had argued about which of them was the greatest.

Application
Amazingly enough, they thought that Jesus didn’t know what they were discussing. But He knew what was in their hearts, and even though they didn’t answer His question, Jesus knew exactly what they had been talking about.

When are we going to learn that we have no secrets from God?

Notice that Jesus did not condemn them or rebuke them for desiring greatness. He did not say that it is wrong to want to be great. He did not say that it is wrong to want to succeed. I believe that God has given all of us an inborn trait that makes us want to succeed in life, to be great in whatever it is that we do. Jesus doesn’t say that’s wrong. But instead He redefines what "greatness" is.

What is "greatness?" True greatness is to be found in service, in a concern about others, willing even to be last, instead of always putting yourself first. This is contrary to everything the world teaches. The world says that greatness is measured by how many people serve you. Greatness, according to the world, is measured by the number of lives that you control. But Jesus says that true greatness is measured by how many people you help - how many people you serve along the way.

Prayer
Lord, help me to live a truly great life, not be the worlds standard, but yours.

Mar 1 2009 Num 28-29, Mark 8

Scripture
But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men. Mark 8:33

Observation
Jesus had just asked his disciples about what others were saying about him. And after hearing a few responses, Jesus ask them, what they believed about him. Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”

Jesus then tried to help them understand what that meant. But they resisted acknowledging the truth of what Jesus said. After rebuking Peter, Jesus makes a very interesting observation…”You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

It would seem that Peter had the right answer, but he had no idea what it meant.

Application
Here are my takeaways from the story.

First, we are more self-centered than we realize and second, when we aren’t doing God’s work, we are doing Satan’s work!
What else can I say?

Prayer
Lord, please help me never to get in front of you but always safely behind you where I can follow.

Feb 28 2009 Num 24-27, 1 Cor 13

Scripture
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. I Cor 13:4

Observation
The apostle Paul is describing a kind of love that is rarely seen and experienced in this world. It is completely externally focused…it is always about others.

Someone has said pride is the dandelion of the soul. Its root goes deep; only a little left behind sprouts again. Its seeds lodge in the tiniest encouraging cracks. And it flourishes in good soil: The danger of pride is that it feeds on goodness.

Application
We have to ask ourselves…how are we doing on this one? Are we seeking more humility in our life or are we on a pride ride?

Pride and humility interact against one another, and they have a yin/yang relationship. The more pride we have, the less humility. The more humility we have, the less pride. This flux is constant, and one way or another the balance of the two adds up to 100%.

This is not just about experiencing God’s love, but showing this kind of love to others.

Prayer
Lord, who can love like this but you…the God is who love. Please come and live and love through me.

Feb 27 2009 Num 21-23, Mark 6-7

Scripture
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
Number 21:9

Observation
The Israelites were wandering in the desert. Why were they wandering? Because they refused to trust God’s leading. They had been led right to the border of the Promised Land, but they were afraid to enter. God did not make them go forward, so he allowed them to stay in the desert and wonder.

So they wondered and then they started to fuss and criticize. But they picked the wrong person to criticize. The sin of the Israelites was to criticize God. They refused to trust God’s love and care. They forgot the miracles God had done for them. In short, they were so focused on themselves and what they thought was best.

And the consequences came upon them almost immediately. The Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people and bit many of the people and they died. And so the people – in the throws of agony – recognized their sin. They called to God and said, “We sinned… take the snakes from among us.” And God in his mercy heard the people and provided a way for them to be saved from death.

Application
God’s answer to the problem of the snakes was rather odd. It is interesting that God didn’t remove the snakes from the camp. The consequences of sin remained with the Israelites. They were still bitten – still felt the fiery poison. But what God did provide was salvation from death. He allowed the Israelites who trusted God to avoid perishing as a result of sin.

It is also interesting that God didn’t provide a sophisticated snake serum. He didn’t enable the healers to develop an amazing cure. He didn’t create a special liturgy or ceremony that the priests could use to save the snake bit. He just said, “Look at the bronze snake on the wooden pole.”Why a snake, I wonder? Was God trying to cast a shadow back to the original problem – the serpent in the Garden? Or was God trying to force people to look at and confess the root of the problem – sin? You see, it sure is easy to focus on the symptoms – the little white lies, the sinful desires, the lusts, the laziness. Focusing on the symptom – the snake bite tempts us to try to find a solution to that rather than what caused the snake bite.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for Jesus who was lifted up on the cross so I can look and live.

Feb 26 2009 Num 19-20, Ps 28 Mark 5

Scripture
When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. Mark 5:27-28

Observation
Jesus had been summoned to go to the home of Jarius to heal his daughter. Jarius had come to a point of desperation because his daughter was dying and his only hope was in the Lord. As our Lord goes to see about this little girl, another nameless woman, who also has reaches a point of desperation, steals the scene.

Application
Have you ever considered the power of a touch? I can still remember what it felt like to hold the hand of my first girlfriend in fourth grade. She probably can too because I was so nervous I am sure my hand was all sweaty.

I can remember how I felt when I first placed my arm around Shirlene and how just touching her made me feel special. I especially remember the first time I held my daughter in my arms and what a powerful moment that was. The power of a touch can be amazing.

And while all that is good, I cannot say any of these touches made me whole. But the day my faith reached out and touched Jesus…I was truly made whole.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for being close enough that we may touch you..

Feb 25 2009 Num 17-18, Ps 29 Mark 4

Scripture
But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred Mark 4 8

Observation
This is the parable of the sower and the seed. The story sounds simply enough, but in it lies an incredible important spiritual truth that every disciple must learn if they are not to become discouraged.

As much as we would all want to believe…not everyone who hears the gospel will receive it. And equally disheartening, not everyone who receives the gospel will continue until the end. Jesus always tells it like it is.

Application
Anyone who knows me knows I believe in public evangelism. This can sometimes create some debate among my colleagues who might feel public evangelism doesn’t work anymore.

I believe the answer to this debate is found in the parable of Jesus. Does evangelism work all the time for all the people? No. I would even be willing to concede that evangelism doesn’t work most of the time for most of the people. But I strongly believe that evangelism works some of the time for some of the people. And therein lays the reason we should do it.

We should not get discouraged when some of the seed falls by the wayside or on the thorny ground. Jesus told us we should expect it. But then Jesus also told us we could expect some seed…yes, even just a little seed, to fall into good soil and it will produce 30, 60 and even 100 fold results.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for demonstrating to us that you are truly the Lord of the harvest.

Feb 24 2009 Num 14-16, Mark 3

Scripture
And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: Mark 3 13-15

Observation
Jesus must have known from the beginning that He alone would never be able to do all that would be necessary to preach the Good News to every person upon the earth. So here we find God’s plan beginning to unfold. Jesus calls people from all different walks of life to become disciples in order that they might carry on the mission of Christ after He has returned to heaven.

Application
I have often struggled with what it really means to be a disciple. I not just talking about the twelve he called two thousand years ago. What about today…what does it mean to be a disciple today?

Jesus always makes things simple:
--He calls
--He invites them to send time with Him
--He sends them out to preach

Somewhere along the line, we have made the simple…difficult.

Prayer
Lord, I know I often have the tendency to make things more difficult than they really are. Thank you for reminding me that at the heart of being a disciple is simply spending time with you.

Feb 23 2009 Num 12-13, Ps 90, Mark 2

Scripture
When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. Mark 2 5

Observation
It didn’t take very long for word to get out…there was a new preacher in town. No, this preacher wasn’t like all the others; there was something different about him. Not only could he preach, he could cast out demons and he could heal people. With a resume like that, He didn’t have trouble getting a crowd.

I can imagine as soon as these four friends heard about Jesus, they immediately thought of their other friend; the one who was paralyzed. If we could just get him to Jesus, they knew he would be healed. But it wasn’t that easy…it never is.

When they arrived, the place was packed. There was no handicapped parking that day and when they saw the crowd, they knew this wasn’t going to be easy. Since the crowd wasn’t going to make a way, they decided to make their own…through the roof…right down in front of Jesus.

Application
Have you ever wondered about faith? What is it? How would you describe it? I often have trouble with things that I can’t see. But then I read this text and I realize, faith isn’t something that is invisible; it can be seen.

What was it Jesus saw when He looked up at those guys tearing a hole in the roof? I wonder…what did faith look like that day? When Jesus saw their faith, was it their belief, their hope or their strong desire to have their friend healed or was it something more.

All of those things are a part of it, but faith that day looked like a hole in a roof.

Prayer
Lord, let me live my life today so that you and others might see my faith..

Feb 22 2009 Num 10-11, Ps 27, Mark 1

Scripture
The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, ‘‘If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!” Numbers 11:4-6

Observation
As the children of Israel journeyed through the wilderness, God miraculously provided for them and gave them all that they had need of. Being in a wilderness, in a place of lack and scarcity was not a problem for God.

God gave them food that came down from heaven day after day. God gave them water miraculously from a rock. God gave them protection from their enemies. God gave them his presence in the cloud and pillar of fire.

Rather than concentrating on what they had, they looked at what they did not have. This is very dangerous but it is also very prevalent. Don’t we tend to do the same thing? Don’t we whine and gripe because certain things aren’t happening while totally overlooking all that God is doing?

Application
How on earth could God’s people complain about food falling from heaven? It seems to me they didn’t complain when they were hungry and had nothing to eat. They were quite pleased with it.

Now as they murmur and complain, I wonder what was in their tummy. Had they just eaten of the Lord’s manna? Had they just stuffed themselves and then started to complain.

It seems to me, this is what we all do. Rather than being thankful for what we have, we complain about what we don’t have. I need to spend more time praising and thanking God for what He has done and what He is doing. I believe if I would do that, I wouldn’t feel like complaining about what I don’t have.

Prayer
Lord, give me a grateful heart.

Feb 21 2009 Num 8-9, Acts 28

Scripture
Now when they had escaped, they then found out that the island was called Malta. Acts 28:1

Observation
The Apostle Paul was in the center of God’s perfect will.

He had been threatened with death in the city of Jerusalem …. but he was in God’s perfect will. He had been arrested by the Romans…. but he was in God’s perfect will. He had been locked away in a dark damp cell and mistreated,…. but he was in God’s perfect will. He was bound and escorted under guard to a ship that would take him to his final destination, a place from which there would be no coming back,…. but he was in God’s perfect will. He was restricted from moving about freely, held prisoner among heathen sailors who cared little for God,…. but he was in God’s perfect will. He was on a ship bound for Rome…. a ship that would face one of the fiercest storms in the Biblical times… a ship that would be shipwrecked on a strange island called Malta, a ship that would be broken into many small pieces,… but he was still in God’s perfect will.

Paul’s present circumstances never stopped him from doing God’s will. This was just another inconvenience and another bump in the road. He knew his destination and he knew that the Holy Spirit was with him,... guiding him,... leading him ... and watching over him, every step of the way.

Application
What I see in this story and indeed Paul’s entire life is…. just because we are going through adversity, trials and other storms in life does not mean that we are not in God’s perfect will. In fact, many times, it’s exactly the opposite. All along this road of life that we all must travel there will be pitfalls, troubles, trials and tribulations that we cannot avoid. Paul had more than his fair share of storms, but he never let them blow him off course.

Prayer
Lord, please be my anchor in the storms of life. Let my life by guided and steered by the Holy Sprit and not the storm.

Feb 20 2009 Num 7, Ps 23, Acts 27

Scripture
…my cup runneth over. Psalm 23:5b

Observation
Jesus said that one of His purposes for coming to earth was that we might experience the fullness of life; He called it the more abundant life. David experienced this kind of life first-hand and writes about it here.

It is not just life, nor is it just a full life, but he is speaking about a life that is overflowing. Overflowing with what? God!

Application
Most people don’t really experience life, much less this overflowing life. It seems to me that Christ doesn’t want to just join us in our pitiful little existence; He wants to come into our life and bring all this abundance with Him.

Isn’t it ironic that we all have been led to believe to really experience all of life you have to follow the ways of the world? We have been taught and preached to that being a Christian is all about doing without. And I suppose to some extent that is true. But it isn’t until we are emptied of the world that God is able to fill us with the things of God.

Prayer
Lord, fill me up please…to the top…and then some.

Feb 19 2009 Num 5-6, Acts 26

Scripture
Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.”
Acts 26:28

Observation
The Apostle Paul had been kept prisoner for over two years in Caesarea by the Roman Governor Felix. However, Felix was replaced by another Governor named Festus, and straight away, before he can settle in, the Jews are in to see him, demanding Paul be delivered to them. Why did they Paul? Because Paul had been one of them! Now he was preaching the Gospel, which they hated! Although he had been out of the way for two years, as soon as this new governor was on the scene, they started stirring up trouble. They wanted Festus to bring Paul to Jerusalem in order that they could lay in wait, ambush and kill him.

Not long after this incident, a special induction ceremony was held for the new Governor to celebrate his coming into office at Caesarea. The Jewish King Agrippa comes to visit with his sister Bernice. This was a sort of diplomatic visit, as it were. Now, it is while they were visiting that Festus brings up this matter of his prisoner Paul, who he had inherited from this predecessor and whom the Jews desired to kill. Agrippa is interested in this, and asked Festus if he could hear Paul for himself.

Application
The text I have selected is only eight words in length but they are some of the saddest to ever grace the pages of the Bible. Looking upon this story we can see that this is an example of God reaching out to the sin-blighted heart of a man to give that man a chance to be saved. And yet that man would not hear because of the love of the world and the circumstances of his life.

I wonder…what was it that held the king back that day? I can only guess that it was something he was unwilling to give up. What was it he couldn’t let go of in order that he might grasp the Savior?

More importantly…how many times have we been there?
ALMOST willing to commit my life fully to Christ.
ALMOST willing to serve God unreservedly
ALMOST willing to enter into ministry for Him

Prayer
Lord, please help me to keep You the absolute FIRST in my life. If that happens, there will be no ALMOST’s in my life..

Feb 17 2009 Num 1-2, Acts 24

Scripture
Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you. Acts 24:25

Observation
Paul’s in trouble again with the Jews. They’ve been trying to find a way to kill him, they tried to get the Roman Government to execute him for blasphemy, and they wouldn’t have except they had a small problem. Paul was a Roman Citizen so he was protected a bit by their legal system; so Paul is brought in front of the Governor Felix.
Here is Paul, who is innocent coming before the man who had the power to release him. Paul could have easily been tempted to argue for his release but he wasted no time at all. At every opportunity he preached Christ

Verse 25 tells us “Felix was afraid.” He heard God and trembled. He didn’t deny what Paul preached neither did he outright reject it. He didn’t laugh, he didn’t sneer, he didn’t cry. He trembled and he trembled with conviction. God had spoken to his soul. Sin had found him out and he trembled

Application
We are not told what happens to Felix or his wife, but it is clear from this story that God brings conviction to a person and invites us to act on it. I wonder how many times we put off something God is asking of us to a more “convenient” time.

God is impressing me over and over again with this important truth; any delay on part to what God is asking of me is disobedience. We don’t always see that, but it is. If God is asking, He is asking for me to act now, not later.

Prayer
Lord, please help my first response to you to be one of quick obedience.

Feb 16 2009 Lev 26-27, Acts 23

Scripture
Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day. Acts 23:1

Observation
The Apostle Paul was no stranger to persecution. He was warned ahead of time that danger awaited him on his return to Jerusalem, and when he arrived, a mob attacked him. The Roman authorities arrived and rescued Paul from this mob…they were in such a frenzy, the authorities had to actually lift Paul over their heads to get him out of there. So now Paul stands before the Roman authorities, and they decide to interrogate him by torture. They prepare to scourge him, and then the information comes out that he was a Roman citizen. That scared them, and they backed off. They turned him over to the Jewish council to decide.

The Sanhedrin was their Supreme Court, made up of seventy leading Bible teachers, and their council had the power to execute him. Paul knows their power of life and death, but he stands before them at peace. He’s looking them straight in the eyes, not ashamed, not afraid, and not about to back down. Paul used to be a member of their number…and now they consider him to be a turncoat…a traitor. There’s nothing this group would like more than to execute him. Yet he stands before them cool, calm, and collected.

Application
It is in times like this…crisis’ that we really find out what we are made of. Crisis don’t make the man, they reveal the man. Paul has lived well and pretty soon he will die well.

I have often wondered…how will I finish? Will I finish well? I cant think of anything more important than that. What a testimony to be able to say, I have fulfilled my duty to God.

Prayer
Lord, please help me to remember that I am not just living for this life, but the life to come. I pray that I will be able to live in such a way that I will finish well.

Feb 15 2009 Lev 25, Ps 25-26, Acts 22

Scripture
Brethren and fathers, hear my defense before you now. And when they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they kept all the more silent. Acts 22:1-2

Observation
Paul had been worshipping in the temple, when he was falsely accused of bringing a Gentile inside the temple. A riot followed. The captain of the Roman guard broke up the riot, and bound Paul with chains. Paul asked the captain for an opportunity to speak up and when granted, what does Paul say? What sermon would he choose to preach? He shares his personal testimony.

Application
Here is the greatest preacher who has ever lived, beside Christ of course, and what does he choose to say; his testimony. It is interesting to note that three different times in the book of Acts, the story of Paul’s conversion is described.

We are often tempted to think that because we don’t know all of the nuances of theology or have a complete understanding of doctrine, we are not capable of preaching to others about Christ.

I need to remember the best sermon I can preach to others is what Christ has done in my life.

Prayer
Lord, help me to remember that people unbelievers don’t need to hear doctrine, they need to see Jesus and how he can work in a person’s life.

Feb 14 2009 Lev 23-24, Ps 24, Acts 21

Scripture
Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? Psalm 24:3

Observation
Whenever there’s going to be some great event in public life there’s always some special music composed to celebrate the occasion. Psalm 24 is a song for a special occasion. It was to be sung as a processional song as David brought the Ark of the Covenant into the newly captured city of Jerusalem. It was to be a great day for at long last David had finished fighting to gain control of the country.

As David pondered over his plans he began to realize that coming up to Jerusalem with the Ark wasn’t only a physical journey, it was a spiritual experience of the greatest importance as well. Like all the other inspired prophetic figures of the Bible his awareness of God was heightened as the Holy Spirit came upon him.

Application
This was the most important question David could ask. Who is qualified to enter the presence of God Almighty? It’s a question we are well advised to know the answer to, and to be absolutely certain we conform to its requirements.

David answers the question by laying out four conditions…clean hands, pure heart, no base values and no cheating. I wonder how David felt after writing these words. Distinctly uneasy I would think, for in setting out those four conditions of entry into Zion, the city of God - he had just condemned himself by his own words.


As I process what David is saying in this passage, I too realize that I come up short and not just a little. But I am not left without hope. Why? How could anyone feel hopeful and optimistic about what David say here? The answer is in verse 6 where God reveals himself as the “God of Jacob.” Jacob is the man who at one time was as crooked and twisted as could be imagined.

Praise the God of Jacob, who knows how to make the crooked strait.

Prayer
Lord do your work in me to prepare me to stand before Your holy place!

Feb 13 2009 Lev 20-22, Acts 20

Scripture
And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. Acts 20:22-24

Observation
Paul had spent three years in Ephesus teaching and building up the church. He left and spent the winter in Corinth and is now on his way to Jerusalem. He sends for the elders of the church and he proceeds to give them his last words and he tells them that he will never see them again.

Can you imagine their response? All of his friends begging him not to go. They pleaded with them that he should not go. These were Christian people telling him that he should not do what God had called him to do. I imagine if He was not tuned into the voice of God in his life he could have very well listened to his well meaning Christian friends.

Application
Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish what God is asking us to do. If we really want to know and will listen, I believe we will eventually hear the answer. The difficult thing is that God does not ask us what is easy or what we want He asks us to do what he knows is best.

Paul was the kind of guy that had a zest for living. I can almost guarantee that Paul didn’t like the idea of dying for his relationship with Jesus. But that’s where the call of God was leading him to go. Paul knew that being a Spirit led follower means carrying a cross not climbing ladders.

The question that is left for me is, what is it that the Spirit is asking me to do? Where does he want me to go? There are a number of good things that could be done in our world but if God is not asking us to do them then we should leave them for something else. We need to concentrate on what God is asking us to do.

Prayer
Father, I want to be so in tune with what you are doing and how the Spirit is leading me that I will know with the same confidence as Paul where you are leading. Then, Lord help me to be surrendered enough to accept your will, wherever that might lead.

Feb 12 2009 Lev 18-19, Ps 13 Acts 19

Scripture
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘I am the Lord your God. ‘According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances. ‘You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances, to walk in them: I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 18:1-4

Observation
These verses clearly command the people of God to avoid the sinful life that the people in the land of Egypt lived out. Egypt symbolized idolatry, lust, immorality, pride and many other things that a modern world can offer. God is saying leave all these things behind.

Not only does God warn the people about the past, He says there are also things that should be avoided in the present world that we live in. Canaan is said to be the Land flowing with milk and honey which means that even in a nearly perfect environment there can be dangers for God’s people.

Application
Three times in this chapter we see the phrase, "I am the Lord". Could it be that God is trying to tell us something? What is God saying to me when He says, “I am the Lord?” It seems pretty obvious, doesn’t it?

Sin is no longer your master, I am. I am your Lord; therefore follow my commands and my ways. Don’t live like the Egyptians and don’t live like the Canaanites, live like Christians.

Prayer
Lord, I must confess that even though you have delivered me from Egypt, there are still times when all I want to do is live like the Egyptians. Please help me to remember that living by your standards is what will bring me the greatest joy.

Feb 11 2009 Lev 15-17, Acts 18

Scripture
And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. Acts 18:24-25

Observation
Here we are introduced to a Jew named Apollos. Apollos was an eloquent man with very impressive credentials. Apollos was “mighty in the Scriptures,” which means he was well versed in the Old Testament Scriptures but it also points out he had been instructed in the way of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. We don’t know exactly what Apollos knew and did not know, but it is clear that Apollos had a limited knowledge of the Lord Jesus. But even with his limited knowledge, he boiled with passion.

When Aquila and Priscilla heard him speak in the synagogue, these tentmakers took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. Notice what Aquila and Priscilla did and did not do. This bible says “they took him aside" and explained the way of God more accurately. They opened their hearts and their home to this young preacher. They did not embarrass him in public, but privately and lovingly completed his theological picture.

Application
This is such an impressive story of how God can use anyone, if they are willing. One of the reasons God has given us the church is to build each other up. Here is a great example of the church living out its purpose.

How may of us can recall a pastor or teacher or friend who challenged us to go further than we would have on our own? I once hear a preacher ask “who taught Martin Luther his theology and inspired his translation of the New Testament? Who visited Dwight L. Moody at a shoe store and spoke to him about Christ? Who was the elderly woman who prayed faithfully for Billy Graham for over twenty years?” Had it not been for these unknown people – these nobodies – what would the world have missed?

God calls all of us to do what Aquila and Priscilla did. Rather than sit back and criticize someone who is lacking, with a humble spirit, take them aside and teach them.

What was the result? Apollos became an even greatest influence for the kingdom of God.

Prayer
Lord, please open my eyes to people around me that I might encourage and influence their lives to have a greater impact on your kingdom.

Feb 10 2009 Lev 13-14, Acts 17

Scripture
And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; Acts 17:6

Observation
We have seen through the book of Acts the great lengths Paul would go to share the gospel, even being humiliated and thrown into prison in order to minister to a bunch of other guys in jail.

By worldly standards, many people would believe that Paul’s trip to share the gospel in Philippi was a total failure. He didn’t start up some big revival but only led a few notable people to Christ.

Here we see Paul’s perseverance pays off. The mission field in Thessalonica was white unto harvest, and God used Paul to touch the lives of many, many people there. Even though God blessed in an amazing way, there are alwys some who will not listen. That would have been fine if they had just simply not believed, and went about their business. But, they became angry and bitter at Paul and Silas, they were jealous of all the people leaving the synagogue to follow Jesus.

These folks wanted to keep the status quo. You see, as people, we tend to fear and shun change, and that is what making a decision to follow Jesus is all about – change.

Application
From time to time I ask myself, “Am I really making a difference in the world.” Whether we realized it or not, that is our purpose. We are call to share a life-changing message with all people. Some will excitedly embrace it, others will bitterly oppose it, but regardless we are to be faithful in sharing it.

I believe as a church we can truly turn Tulsa upside down. How? One life at a time. We all have seen what can happen when someone hears and opens their heart to the message of Jesus.

What could happen in Tulsa if just a handful from our church with work with Paul’s passion and intensity? I have no doubt we could turn Tulsa upside down…and it wouldn’t take very long to do it.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for the inspiration we find in the Bible. To see what can happen when men and women will simply put your work first in their life is truly amazing. Lord, there all way too many people in Tulsa that still have no idea who we are. We haven’t even begun to turn this community upside down. Father, help us to become all you need us to be.

Feb 9 2009 Lev 10-12, Acts 16

Scripture
And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. Leviticus 10:1

Observation
In Leviticus 8-10, we see that God provided a priest to help this new community understand the will of God, and to give them instruction. It was also his job to guide their confessions of sin through sacrifices and to proclaim God’s forgiveness. So we learn about Aaron, the brother of Moses, as he is ordained for this awesome task of becoming a priest for the people. And at every step we see how important it is to do what God asks. In chapter 8-10 there is one little phrase occurs 16 times. That phrase is “as the Lord commanded Moses.”

The Bible makes absolutely clear that they are following the instructions exactly as God gave them. That phrase is used again and again. And as a result, we read in 9:33 that the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. When God’s people obey his word, they can expect to enjoy his blessing. But when people do not obey, the opposite is true. In chapter 10, we see that Aaron’s sons do something that was not commanded by the Lord and the fire of blessing was turned into a fire of punishment.

Application
When we disobey God we are playing with fire. God takes our relationship with him seriously. If we have promised to serve him faithfully, that is what he expects. Nothing less will do. To those who have been given much, much is required.

Because of what Jesus did on the cross, we who believe in Him are now able to do what only the priest could do in Aaron’s time. We can enter the sanctuary. We can draw near to God. As I was reading this story, I was thinking, “I’m sure glad I’m not a priest.” Then it hit me, as a member of the body of Christ, I am part of the royal priesthood. I am to live a holy life. I am responsible for discerning God’s will. And yes, I have a responsibility for others.

As we stand before a holy God, we have to ask ourselves if we have taken obedience to God seriously.

Prayer
Father, please help me to understand more of your holiness. Let me not forget that just because You are merciful and gracious, You are still holy

Feb 8 2009 Lev 7-9, Acts 15

Scripture
And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question. Acts 15:1-2

Observation
No sooner have Paul and Barnabas arrived back at Antioch and reported to the church how God has been working through them and has opened a door of faith for the Gentiles, than trouble arises. It’s ironic isn’t it? God is doing a great work, there are stories of great miracles and the church is experiencing phenomenal growth. So what happens? The brethren want to have a meeting to talk about procedure! What was the issue? These new gentile believers were being brought into the church through baptism and not circumcision. That is, they were becoming Christians without also becoming Jews.

And at one level they’re right to be worried. This moment is the turning point in the history of the Church. From this moment on the church will never be the same again.

Application
I can’t help but think how important it was to get it right in this meeting. What would happen to the future of the church if these hard-line Jews had won the day? God wanted to take His people in a totally new direction and if they were not careful, His own disciples could end up blocking what God was wanting to do.

It is so easy to become so invested in the work that we do, that we forget this is not our church but Gods. He is the leader and He has the plan. Not only that, but we have all learned that God is not always predictable. He moves in ways that sometimes are difficult for us to understand.

So how can we be sure that we stay in tune with what God wants to do? I think the key here is that God give us evidence through his working in our lives. Someone once wrote, “I can pray that God will bless me and join me in my work, or I can choose to join Him in His work he is already blessing.”

Prayer
O Lord, please open my eyes to see all You are doing in and around my life. Let me recognize how You are at work. Never let me obstruct what you are doing or want to do in my life or Your church.

Feb 7 2009 Lev 4-6, Acts 14

Scripture
And saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, “who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. “Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.. Acts 14:15-17

Observation
When Paul and Barnabas arrive in Lystra, God enables Paul to perform a miracle of healing a lame man. The people are so amazed that their superstition takes over, and they try to worship Paul and Barnabas as the Greek gods Zeus and Hermes.

Paul and Barnabas are only messengers, ordinary guys with a message of good news from God. Paul pleads with the people to not worship him, telling them that he’s just as human as they are. Paul then challenges them to turn from their worthless superstitions to the living God. Paul not only declares that his God lives, but that He is the God who created all things.

Application
How can we know that God is for real and what assurances do we have that this isn’t just all wishful thinking? It is an important question that, at one time or another, every person has to settle.

We all run into to people everyday who are probably willing to believe in God if they can be convinced. How can we help them to believe? I believe we should do what Paul does. He knows his God is invisible, but He has left a calling card…something very easy of all people to see…His creation.

People can deny God, but they cannot deny His work. His creation is everywhere screaming to us that not only does God exists, but He is a good and caring God.

Prayer
My prayer Lord is that I can come to know you better through your wonderful created work. That through the things you created, I will see your love, compassion and majesty.

Feb 6 2009 Lev 1-3, Acts 13

Scripture
And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will. Acts 13:22

Observation
Wow, a man after God’s own heart!

This bold statement said about King David is derived from 1 Samuel 13:14, in which the prophet Samuel said to Saul about David, “But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”

But we all know the rest of the story. We are puzzled because we are familiar with David’s shame of adultery, murder, and deceit concerning Uriah and Bathsheba.

So how could this adulterer, murderer, and liar be called a man after God’s own heart?

Application
One of the things that continue to amaze me about the Bible is its honesty; it is all there; the good, the bad and the ugly. God doesn’t gloss over sin, ever.

If you compare the life of Saul and David, you find they both made mistakes. In fact, a close comparison might lead someone to think that David’s sin was greater than Saul’s. What made the difference? I believe in a word it was repentance. David had it, Saul did not. David knew how to sin, but he also knew how to repent. This story tells me how powerful repentance is as far as God is concerned. Once David repented, God did not see David as the adulterer, murderer and liar, he was a person after His own heart.

Prayer
Father, it is truly a wonderful thing you did in the life of David. My prayer is that I will also experience that kind of full and complete forgiveness. Help me to become a man after your own heart.

Feb 5 2009 Ex 39-40, Ps 15, Acts 12

Scripture
And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work. Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Exodus 40:33-34

Observation
The purpose of the tabernacle was so that God could dwell among His people. The Bible says that no man can see God with human eyes and live. The glory of God is an interesting study in the Bible, mentioned nearly 400 times, but none more interesting than here in our text.

The glory of God was manifested in a cloud, which the people could see and follow. God’s visible presence would descend upon the tabernacle in the Holy of Holies above the mercy seat, and the glory of God filled that place.

Application
When did the glory come? Verse 34 starts with the word “then”. What happened just before this? Look at the last five words of the previous verse...”‘So Moses finished the work.” Seven times in verses 17-32, the scriptures say, “As the Lord commanded Moses”. It was when Moses, through obedience, had finished his work that God was finally on display in the tabernacle.

I cannot help but think about what this means in light of what the New Testament teaches concerning God’s temple…you and me. I sense what God is saying is that His glory will come upon you and me as well, when we are obedient to display Him in our lives.

Look around the church and these people stand out. I am not talking about those who may ‘”try” to stand out, but those with whom it just happens naturally, or should I say, supernaturally.

When does the glory come? When we obey and display the Lord.

Prayer
Father, my prayer is that Your glory will come in my life. May the glory of the Lord fill this temple!

Feb 4 2009 Ex 37-38, Ps 19, Acts 11

Scripture
And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord. Acts 11:21

Observation
This is a story about the local Church in Antioch. These saints had been driven from Jerusalem by Saul, the arch enemy of the church. They had left land, homes, wealth, friends and even family to go out and spread the Gospel of the risen Lord. They went everywhere preaching the Gospel. It was a spiritual explosion.

How could this spiritual explosion happen? The answer lies in the text, “And the hand of the Lord was with them”.

Application
As Luke describes to us this powerful missionary church, he includes this declaration that the hand of the Lord was with them. I can’t help but ask the question, isn’t the land of the Lord with all churches?

While that might make an interesting discussion, a more important question would be, is the hand of the Lord at Adventist Fellowship? How would we even go about answering it? Would it be something that was so obvious that everyone would come to the same conclusion; either yes he was, or no he wasn’t? Or maybe it would be such that we would have different answers.

I believe the hand of the Lord is indeed with us. I believe it is so, because we have always made sharing the gospel a top priority just as these believers did in Antioch. Jesus promised all power is given in heaven and earth…go ye make teach all nations...and I will be with you always. When we are faithful in doing what Jesus said to do, God always lends a hand.

Prayer
Lord, I want to be in a church where Your presence is obvious. Where we can see people coming to You and lives being changed. Let us never do anything that would cause You not to be with us.

Feb 3 2009 Ex 35-36, Acts 10

Scripture
There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. Acts 10:1-2

Observation
Luke begins this chapter by describing to us a man named Cornelius. We should take note on how Luke describes this man, he says he was a devout man and one that feared God, gave much to the people, and he had a consistent prayer life.

It sounds as though Cornelius was doing pretty well on his own, but God sees that he will need some help to grow to the next level spiritually. Cornelius so far had done everything right. He sought God when it wasn’t apropos for a Roman soldier to do so. His prayer life was probably the envy of many. And the way things seemed he was not ashamed of what he believed. But in order for him to get to the next level spiritually, God needed him to meet Peter who knew the way.

Application
Even though Cornelius found favor with God, he needed more than what the people were saying about him. God could have sent an angel to teach Cornelius what he needed to know, but He chose a different way. He chose rather to use the church, in this case Peter, to help Cornelius and his family to grow in their faith.

I don’t know all the reasons, but God seems to have intentionally chosen the church to help others find their way into the family of God. Whether it is Cornelius, Saul or the Ethiopian eunuch, God gives us the privilege of telling them the Good News.

It makes me wonder, how many Cornelius’ are out there just waiting for someone like Peter to lead them to the next step.

Prayer
Lord I want to make myself available for you to use me to help others grow in their experience with you. And Lord, if there are times when I am Cornelius, please send someone to help me grow.

Feb 2 2009 Ex 33-34, PS 16 Acts 9

Scripture
And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” Exodus 33:8-20

Observation
Here we are a conversation between Moses and the Lord God Himself. It’s an intriguing passage, isn’t it? Moses boldly asks God to reveal His glory. Can you imagine that? Our first reaction is shocked amazement. The second is maybe to condemn Moses for doing it.

God doesn’t seem to get upset, instead the Lord replied, "Moses, the first thing we need to get straight is that I am going to do this my way, not yours.” Then He said, "I am going to pass before you. My glory is going to be there." "But, you’re not ready to see it. So here is a rock, and you stand on the rock and get ready. The moment I pass by I am going to take you and put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with my hand. Then I will pass by. Once I have passed by I will remove my hand and you will see my back. “

Application
I see in this passage something about the way God reveals Himself to me. First of all, it says that God sometimes passes so near that I can feel His presence. I can know that He is there. But at the same time, there is a dimension to God that I will never be able to see or understand or comprehend with my finite, puny mind. I serve a mighty and powerful God who invites me to know Him in a personal and intimate way. Just as Moses asked God to reveal Himself to him, I can make the same request. The question we all have to ask ourselves is…do we really want God that close?

There are times I would have to admit, I want God to be in my life, but not too close. As humans we have learned to keep our distance from really powerful things, they tend to scare us. I believe we all want the powerful God in our life…but at a safe distance.

Prayer
Lord, I want to thank you for what you are saying to me through this story. You are there and anytime I would chose, you are willing to come close. Lord, help me to overcome my fear that keep me from wanting to see your glory.

Feb 1 2009 Ex 30-32, Acts 8

Scripture
And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. Exodus 32:1

Observation
As they came to the base of Mount Sinai, the Children of Israel made camp while Moses went up on the mountain to commune with God on their behalf. It was during this 40 days upon the mountain that God laid out the 10 Commandments, writing them with His own hand upon two tablets of stone. This should have been a great time of victory and rejoicing for the Children of Israel. They had not only been set free but now they were hearing from God directly.

They didn’t react with worshipping the Lord though. They grew impatient and finally decided that Moses must have died. He had been gone too long. They called for Aaron, Moses’ brother and spokesman before Pharaoh, to build them a golden calf.

Application
I have often wondered why this happened so quickly? Isn’t it strange that these people, who were slaves for so long, would want to go back to their slavery and not serve the God of Love, Mercy and Goodness?

We have a picture here of what can happen if we don’t stay true to God. It started almost immediately; the whining, complaining, and grumbling. Israel didn’t really trust God. Then when they had to wait, they soon forgot the miraculous power of God to deliver, to heal, to save and to give them new life. They soon fell back into their desire for the slave pits of Egypt.

I am so often tempted to think; how could they do this? Then I am reminded, how often I do this same thing. It seems everything comes down to trust. When I do not trust God completely, I start to grumble and complain. Then when things really take a turn I don’t like, I am tempted to retreat rather than waiting on God.

Prayer
Lord, I admit I do not always understand why you choose to lead me as you do, but I know you always have my best interest in mind. Please help me to learn to trust you completely.

Jan 31 2009 Ex 28-29, Acts 7

Scripture
Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord. Acts 7:57

Observation
These are the final moments in the life of one of the first Christian martyrs. The men Stephen was speaking to were the great and mighty men of their day and nation. They knew the Scriptures and should have been among the first to recognize Jesus and come to Him.

It was because they knew that Stephen was telling them the truth and that the truth did not agree with their own pet ideas and theories that they became so enraged that they committed murder.

Application
My first response to this story is one of amazement. After rejecting Jesus and putting Him to death on the cross, God sends another message of truth to them through the preaching of Stephen. God is not attempting to condemn them, I believe He is trying to save them.

My second response is to wonder if I could ever be guilty of this same thing. Stephen described them as “uncircumcised in heart”. In order words, he acknowledged they were different from the world in the outside, but not on the inside.

One of the conditions to be saved is first to hear the Gospel. Paul said, "How can they be saved except first they hear?" and then again, "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God."

Prayer
Lord, please help me to never close my ears to the truth. Sometimes it might be hard to hear it, but I know deep down it is the only thing that will help me.

Jan 30 2009 Ex 25-27, Acts 6

Scripture
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. Exodus 25:8

Observation
After God had delivered Israel from their four hundred years of Egyptian slavery,Moses had led them to Mount Sinai. While they were camped at the base of the mountain, God had given Moses the law, and along with it instructions for the building of the tabernacle.

As the Israelites were given the Ten Commandments, I am sure it must have brought conviction to their hearts. Isn’t that what the Law does; convict sinful hearts? But God doesn’t stop there. He immediately gives them the sanctuary; a place where they can go to find forgiveness and atonement. Isn't that interesting...law and grace even in the Old Testament.

The reason stated for the sanctuary; “that I might dwell among them” has always implied that it was for God’s benefit. I suppose that is true, God wanted to be among His people. But since God is omniscient, the sanctuary had to be, at least to some extent, for Israel’s benefit. They knew very little about God, so God sets a schoolhouse in their midst so they can learn about him.

Application
It seems to me that God doesn’t just want to work in my life; he wants to be in my life. Anywhere and everywhere I go, He wants me to know, He is there.

Israel didn’t ask God to dwell with them. God is the one who takes the initiative. All through the Bible I read about a God who is pursuing me!

Prayer
Wow, a holy God living among unholy people! Thank you Lord that you are willing to be a part of my world. Why? So we can be together…here and more importantly…hereafter.

Jan 29 2009 Ex 23-24, Ps 14 Acts 5

Scripture
Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Exodus 23:9

Observation
The Exodus experience is one of grace, not of works. Hence the requirement to obey God comes out of this experience of grace. Israel had no idea how to live as a community. All they had ever experienced living in Egypt was oppression and now God laid down the ground-rules of how to live in this new community of grace.

As Israel lived according to these laws (yes, there are still laws when living under grace) they would certainly be noticed by others. God said they were to be to be His special people, “kingdom of priests and a holy nation”.

Application
God has also delivered me out of the bondage of sin into an experience of grace. While some would say this new freedom means we are not subject to God’s laws and commands, it is quite the opposite.

God have invited me to be part of a new nation…a holy nation. As part of this new community, I have a responsibility to reflect His grace to others. When I forget His grace toward me, it is easy to be graceless to my neighbor.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for your great deliverance from the bondage of sin. Please help me to remember that the only way to stay free is to live within your will for my life.

Jan 28 2009 Ex 21-22, Ps 12 Acts 4

Scripture
And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:31

Observation
Going through the Gospel of Luke recently we saw how much prayer was a part of Jesus life and certainly the secret of His power. It seems the Holy Spirit also wants us to notice that this same commitment to prayer existed in the early church.

What was the result? The place was shaken, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and they proclaimed the Word of God with boldness.

Application
Everyone wants a church on fire. So what do we do?
--We look to the worship service and ways to make it more moving.
--We look to the music and ways to spice it up.
--We look to the preaching and ways to make it more dramatic.

There is only one way that a church begins to burn with fire and it is when the people are on fire.

Prayer is what lights the fire!

O God, please light your people on fire and let it start with me!

Jan 27 2009 Ex 17-20, Acts 3

Scripture
Then Peter said, ‘‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk Acts 3:6

Observation
Peter probably had some silver and possibly even gold...But this crippled man had already been through this. He already had received silver and maybe some gold, but he was still lame. He was laid daily at the gate of the temple. And I read into this that this man was laid there everyday since he was a child.
What an interesting response Peter gave this man….but what I have I give you.

Application
The question becomes…what do I have and am I willing to give it?
Peter had something...he had something far more powerful than money. And when I gave my heart to Jesus, I got a dose of what Peter had to offer this crippled man.

What does God want me to offer to the “lame” people in my world? I see three things: compassion, faith and Jesus.

Prayer
Lord, they are everywhere. They become so much a part of my world that if I am not careful, I won’t even notice them. Please open my eyes to see these people who will be forever changed if I will just offer them what I have.

Jan 26 2009 Ex 14-16, Acts 2

Scripture
Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. Exodus 14:12-14

Observation
When the children of Israel left Egypt to enter into the life God called them to live, almost immediately they find themselves facing a major hurtle. They had come to the bank of the Red Sea and set up camp. Notice that they are in the will of God; they are following the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Yet, the enemy pursues them and all of a sudden they were facing an impossible situation with no visible means of escape.

They had nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Their only options seemed to be either get killed in battle or drown trying to swim across the sea. It looked as though they were boxed in and no matter what they did, where they turned, or what they contemplated, there appeared to be no way out. And guess what? They were right where God wanted them to be. They were in the perfect will of God and yet in His will their faith was being tested

Application
The events of our lives do not happen by accident; God is in control of everything. When we face our own Red Sea, that place of overwhelming difficulty, we tend to believe that we must have done something wrong, made God mad and now He is dumping these problems on us. This is not the God of the Bible.He had a purpose in bringing the children of Israel to the Red Sea and he has a purpose for the Red Sea’s that I will face this week. When I face difficulties in life, God wants to accomplish two things: first, He wants to make known His glory to others and second, He wants to teach me to trust Him completely.

Prayer
Lord, when I find myself facing my own Red Sea, please help not to panic and fall apart. In times of uncertainty and utter helplessness, let me realize these are opportunities to develop deeper thrust in you.

Jan 25 2009 Ex 12-13 Ps 21, Acts 1

Scripture
Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. Exodus 12:15

Observation
It was the night that nobody in the land of Goshen was supposed to sleep. The children of Israel had watched the power of God expressed in the previous six plagues, but now the horror of the seventh and final plague was to bring freedom to God’s people.

With the coming of the Passover, the head of the house must cleanse his house of all leaven. For seven days no leaven was to be seen in his house. All in the house must eat of unleavened bread from the first day until the seventh day. Anyone found with leavened food in their houses was to be cut off from the congregation of Israel.

Application
The Passover symbolized the freedom God wanted to give His people… but that feast was followed by six more days that focused on the fact that God’s kind of freedom required His people to REMOVE things from their lives and their homes.

Today, God continues to deliver people from the bondage of sin and sets them on a journey to the Promised Land. We need to be careful to remember that God is holy and everything associated with Him is also holy or sanctified.

For the people of God we should strive to remove all traces of leaven (sin) from our lives.

Prayer
Lord, please help me to remember how holy you are. I admit there are times when I am tempted to think sin is not that big of deal. Open my eyes and my heart to see the truth.
